New MMORPG Camelot Unchained opens servers in Germany – but god, the mood is bad

The MMORPG Camelot Unchained (PC) is intended to be the spiritual successor to the popular PvP MMORPG Dark Age of Camelot. There is good news this month: a dedicated test server has been opened in Germany. Esclabor aims to make the game much more enjoyable for Europeans. But 10 years after the announcement and countless delays, the mood among potential players is devastated.

This is the new server: The head of the game, Marc Jacobs, explained in a news letter on May 6 that after a long time they are ready to have a weekend test on a server in Germany (via camelotunchained).

That’s a big deal for Camelot Unchained because you can’t just move the code to another server like that.

German server significantly reduces latency for Europeans

The test has now been completed and has brought good results (via mailchi). They rave about “great results” – players now have a latency in the tens instead of over 100 milliseconds.

The test is also not just a one-off thing, but a full-fledged server that will continue to be part of the weekend tests in the future.

MMOPRG Camelot Unchained has been in development for 9 years – mood is openly hostile

Former fans extremely upset for 2 years

What’s the reaction? The mood in the MMORPG Camelot Unchained has been down for about 2 years. At that time the team decided to develop a second game parallel to the MMORPG:

  • The developers said the new game, Ragnarok: The Final Stand, would help and advance the MMORPG immensely
  • But the fans didn’t want to hear about it, they wanted the developers to focus fully on Camelot Unchained, because that’s what they paid for

Because Camelot Unchained had been pushed back so many times before, many had lost their faith in the MMORPG and were demanding a refund of the money they crowdfunded into the game.

When the announcement was made, the hopes for the MMORPG were still high:

On the US website Massivelyoverpowered, where the game was still being reported on in a friendly manner for years and developer Marc Jacobs was also a regular visitor, the tone of the comments is cynical and hostile:

  • It’s being ridiculed that even 10 years after the announcement, the newsletter only shows “art” and no gameplay
  • They say bringing a European server to a game that has 2 testers worldwide is ridiculous
  • Another etches: At the moment it is even an exaggeration to talk about Camelot Unchained as a game

Camelot Unchained appears to be in a state where even clearly positive messages signaling progress have been met with player anger.

The reddit for the game is as good as dead: the official news hardly gets any upvotes and comments.

The article that got the most upvotes was whether you should put a warning on Reddit that the game will probably never appear.
