Micron’s new SSD generation has 232 layers
“World’s Most Advanced” NAND Flash
The new NAND flash from Micron is intended to usher in a new generation of SSDs. In future it will be used in memory cards, SSDs and servers.

According to Micron, it has introduced the “world’s most advanced” NAND flash memory. Mass production of the new storage system is due to start in 2023.
NAND flash is a non-volatile form of memory used in various media such as memory cards or SSDs.
What is special about the new 6th generation Micron memory is that the 3D NAND flash is equipped with 232 layers. The previous 5th generation only had 176 layers.
Exact specifications for the new products are still pending, but the company has managed to equip the memory with a capacity of up to 1 TBit TLC (Triple Level Cell = memory cell with 3 bits) by combining two 3D NAND chips with each other.
According to Scott DeBoer, Micron’s Executive Vice President of Technology: “We have optimized the technology to produce the world’s fastest managed NAND and SSD products for data centers and consumers.”
In coming NAND flash generations, Micron intends to further increase the number of layers. The manufacturer’s current roadmap already speaks of memory with more than 300 and even 400 layers.
