New MMORPG on Steam focuses on the Middle Ages and a lot of freedom – shows gameplay from the alpha

Past Fate Alpha

Past Fate has been in development for several years and will be a medieval MMORPG with a lot of freedom and options. Dungeons, raids and battles for territories await you when you play on the PvP server. Now, Past Fate is showing new gameplay from the alpha for the first time in 11 months.

What kind of game is this? In Past Fate, the focus should be on exploring and fighting enemies together. The MMORPG relies on an active combat system in which you have to aim yourself and actively avoid attacks. The fights shown so far are roughly reminiscent of New World.

You create your character from one of five different classes – warrior, necromancer, mage, pirate, priest – and explore the game world with it.

This world should be divided into many islands that you can reach by ship. You should also build these ships yourself and discover treasures at sea, but you should also be able to experience battles. So that you don’t fight these alone, you can put together a crew of NPCs, including archers, gunners or melee fighters.

Your experience in Past Fate will also differ noticeably depending on whether you’re on PvE or PvP servers.

Fight for territories and arenas in PvP, dungeons and raids like in WoW

What is PvP like in Past Fate? Those who play on PvP servers will experience a battle for territory in the open world:

  • If you enter the territory of an enemy faction, you will automatically be flagged as a PvP player. You cannot be attacked in your faction’s territories, but you can attack enemies if you wish. But then you get flagged.
  • It is possible to conquer certain “contested zones” and thus expand your own territory.

On PvE servers, on the other hand, open-world PvP only occurs in the contested zones. You are safe in your own areas and also in the areas of the enemy faction. It is unclear whether you have to actively mark yourself for PvP in the contested territories or whether you can be attacked automatically.

However, both servers will have dedicated 1v1 and 3v3 battlegrounds and PvP arenas to queue for. So everything is there for PvP fans.

What does Past Fate offer for PvE fans? In PvE, the focus is mainly on instances:

  • Dungeons can be entered with a group of up to 5 players. From level 10 there should be a new dungeon every 5 to 10 levels, which are getting harder and harder. As a reward, there is a chance for epic gear.
  • In the endgame there are raids for 25 players. The hardest raids should only be feasible for good guilds and well-established teams. Epic rewards are guaranteed with every run here.

Who roams through the open world will be able to encounter bosses. Some of them should be doable solo, others require other players. The loot depends on how much damage you deal and the bosses appear on random timers.

Germans love the idea of the MMORPG, but the release still seems far away

How is the game doing so far? In the summer of 2020, Past Fate was already playable, albeit in a very raw version. However, at the time we reported that it was mostly popular with German players. According to the developers, around 60% of the users in the Discord came from Germany.

A lot has happened since then. Among other things, the developers started a Kickstarter campaign and raised almost 23,000 euros (via Kickstarter).

In the trailer you can also see that the combat system and the general graphics have been worked on since the test two years ago.

However, Past Fate is still in alpha, with only irregular tests taking place. But you can participate in these if you buy a supporter pack. The cheapest is 20 dollars – about 18 euros (via Past Fate). The game is then played via the Steam platform.

When is the game out? There is currently no release date. It is also unclear whether the MMORPG will be Buy2Play or Free2Play. There is said to be a shop, but it only offers cosmetic content.

What do you think of Past Fate? Does the MMORPG appeal to you or does it all sound too ambitious for an indie game? Feel free to write it in the comments.
