As we recently reported, One Piece is getting a brand new trading card game later this year. In Japan you can already look forward to July, the rest of the world can play the English version at a later date in 2022.

So far we only knew that the Art works be based on original drawings by Eiichiro Oda. Now Bandai Namco has distributed a guide for the game that gives us a glimpse of the mechanics. (via Screenrant)

These are the main mechanics of the One Piece card game

Each deck in One Piece has a commander who has their own square on the board. You can summon this at any time as long as you can afford it. If this card is defeated, it can be revived at any time, but the cost increases each time.

The commander also determines all cards that may be used in a deck. For example, Monkey D. Luffy is red, so only cards of that color can be used. That sounds very restrictive at first, but we’ll have to wait and see how this mechanic plays out in practice. The following commanders are available at the start:

  • Monkey D Luffy
  • Eustass Kid
  • Sir Crocodile
  • Kaido

Bandai Namco also has an extremely interesting One Piece RPG in the works:

Pokemon meets Magic: The commander system is reminiscent of Magic the Gathering, but in One Piece it is linked to a mechanic from the Pokémon card game: the prize cards. Every time your commander takes damage, you may draw a so-called “life card” – the number depends on the respective commander. If you run out of life cards, you lose the game.

The so-called “Don!! cards” act as an energy resource, i.e. as mana. Each round you draw two pieces that you can use to play other cards. In addition, you can place them on another card to unlock special maneuvers.

The trading card game starts with these cards

At the launch you have the choice between four starter decks: In addition to the Straw Hat Pirates, you can also side with the “Worst Generation”, the “Seven Warlords of the Sea” or the “Animal Kingdom Pirates”. There will also be a bonus deck featuring characters from the films.

Of course, you can get additional characters and other cards for your deck via booster packs, which will contain 12 cards each. The first set of packs will be called Romance Dawn, a nod to the manga’s working title. Matching protective covers are also in the works.

Are you interested in the One Piece trading card game? Do you think that some cards can also become as valuable as some Pokémon trading cards?
