Most users in Germany still access the Internet via the telephone line, i.e. they use a DSL or VDSL connection. The following Fritzbox models are suitable for them:

The current top model in this category is the Fritzbox 7590 (AX), which supports connections with VDSL supervectoring 35b, among other things. These are DSL connections that offer download speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s. Such connections are currently still rare, which is why the 7590 should only really be worthwhile for a few customers.

However, the top model also has other advantages, such as the eight internal WLAN antennas, which have a very good range and fast transmission rates of up to 1,733 Mbit/s over 5 GHz and 800 Mbit/s over 2.4 GHz. The AX variant of the router also supports the current Wi-Fi 6 Wi-Fi standard. Users of the 7530 and 7510 models have to get by with lower Wi-Fi speeds.

In recent years, cable connections in particular for broadband Internet have become more and more interesting. AVM currently offers the following Fritzbox models that are suitable for cable Internet:

The top model in this category is called Fritzbox 6690 Cable and offers the highest WLAN speeds of up to 4,800 Mbit/s over 5 GHz and 1,200 Mbit/s over 2.4 GHz. The Fritzbox 6591 Cable offers significantly less speed here (5 GHz: 1,733 Mbit/s, 2.4 GHz: 800 Mbit/s). In comparison, the Fritzbox 6660 has a higher speed of 5 GHz with 2,400 Mbit/s. However, over 2.4 GHz with 600 Mbit/s is less possible. All models are DECT-enabled.

Rural areas in particular often have neither DSL nor cable connections. So if you want fast Internet, you have to rely on wireless transmissions via mobile communications. AVM offers these routers for this purpose:

Strictly speaking, the Fritzbox 6890 LTE is not a pure LTE router at all, but a hybrid router that can process LTE signals, among other things. Apart from that, this model can also be used for VDSL connections with supervectoring and is therefore the jack of all trades among the Fritz boxes. However, this model only makes sense for very few end users, because those who have a VDSL connection with supervectoring usually do not also need a router with an LTE connection.

On the other hand, if you only have the option of connecting to the Internet via LTE, you should use the standard models called Fritzbox 6850 LTE or Fritzbox 6820 LTE. The former Fritzbox is also available with 5G support.

The fastest fiber optic router from AVM: the Fritzbox 5590.

Internet connections via the classic telephone line are slowly but surely reaching their physical limits and even cable connections cannot offer the speeds that can theoretically be transmitted with fiber optic cables. For so-called FTTH (Fiber to the Home) connections, AVM also has suitable routers in its portfolio:

The Fritzbox 5590 is the high-end model for households with a fiber optic connection. It offers five LAN interfaces and speeds of 2,400 Mbit/s over 5 GHz and 1,200 Mbit/s over 2.4 GHz. WLAN-AX and DECT support are also on board.

Although the Fritzbox 5530 Fiber only has three LAN ports, one of the ports offers a transmission speed of 2.5 Gbit/s. With 600 Mbit/s on the 2.4 GHz frequency and 2,400 Mbit on the 5 GHz frequency, the Fritzbox 5530 Fiber also offers fast WLAN thanks to Wi-Fi 6 support.

Fritz boxes without their own modem

For households that already have an Internet router but don’t want to do without an AVM device for WLAN reception, there are two Fritz boxes that don’t have their own modem:

These two routers cannot be connected directly to a DSL or cable network, but must be connected to a modem. The Fritzbox 4060 is the better model for fast WiFi because it supports the new AX standard, while the 4040 only offers AC support. Only the premium model also offers decent speeds of up to 2,400 Mbit/s.
