Update: Whatsapp discontinues support for iOS 10 and iOS 11

from Sarah Petzold
Whatsapp will stop supporting its own messenger software for iOS 10 and iOS 11 in a few months. iPhone users who can no longer be updated to iOS 12 will then no longer be able to use Whatsapp. This applies in particular to the iPhone 5 and older models.

Anyone who currently uses Whatsapp on an iPhone must be prepared for an important change: the software will soon only run on iOS 12 or higher. Support for iOS 10 and iOS 11 is due to end shortly, as the Wabetainfo editorial team has documented with screenshots showing a corresponding warning message.

iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C users are left in the dark

In concrete terms, this means that anyone who is still using an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5c will no longer be able to use Whatsapp after support for iOS 11 or lower has ended: iOS 12 is not available for these devices. Owners of an iPhone 5S and higher must then update their smartphone accordingly to iOS 12 so that Whatsapp continues to work.

According to the announcement shared in a screenshot by Wabetainfo, Whatsapp support for iOS 10 and iOS 11 will end on October 24, 2022. The Whatsapp support website states that users will be informed “in good time and several times” directly in Whatsapp if support for the operating system used is discontinued.

There were already rumors that Whatsapp could remove support for iOS 10 and iOS 11 in the near future at the end of 2021. However, the corresponding reports turned out to be wrong at the time. In the meantime, Whatsapp seems to want to put this project into practice. With the upcoming release of the iPhone 14 and iOS 16 to go with it, this step comes as little surprise.
