After a little more than three years of development, including one year in Early Access, yesterday is open Steam With Fabled Lands the digital implementation of the fantasy gamebook series of the same name by the two authors David Morris and Jamie Thomson published. The developer studio Prime Games is responsible for the adaptation of the first five books as an interactive game book for PC and MacOS.

In Fabled Lands you create a character at the beginning of the English-language choose-your-own adventure title and travel with him to the fantasy land of Harkuna on a beautifully drawn world map. As you explore the massive open world of the fictional continent, you will meet a wide variety of characters who will provide you with any number of quests off the main plot or random events. You have to do without a setting of the narrative adventure. As usual in gamebooks, the adventure framed with a nice UI is mostly illustrated with text panels and coherent artwork.

During quests and when traveling, rolls of the dice on your attributes decide whether your planned action succeeds or fails. When it comes to combat, you switch to an extra screen to tactically beat your numerous enemies in a turn-based manner. This is where your acquired skills, spells, and equipment come into play. Gained experience is reflected in level rises of your hero. Surplus battle loot or finds can be sold for face value in cities and invested in new equipment, such as climbing ropes, compasses or light sources. Visit the Wizards Guild to buy new spells, visit the Blacksmith for weapons and armor. With enough money you can also buy a ship, hire a crew and work as a seafaring trader, the choice is yours. The same applies to the adventure challenge: In addition to the option of creating and reloading a saved game at any time, you can also choose a permadeath mode.

You can see what the whole thing looks like in moving pictures from the trailer provided under the news. During the running time of almost 1:15 minutes, this presents you with various scenes from the game with music, including traveling on the map or the inventory and the Character sheet – the tactical battles are also shown briefly.

Fabled Lands has been available on Steam for PC/MacOS since May 26th until June 2nd at the reduced price of 12.79 euros. After the launch discount has expired, the regular price of 15.99 euros will be charged for the title.
