Sony: When will the PS5 be more available?

from Claus Ludewig
In the current financial report, Playstation boss Jim Ryan promised that the availability of the Playstation 5 would improve, but it still takes a while.

The next-gen consoles Xbox Series X|S and Playstation 5 have been officially available since November 2020, at least in theory. After all, there hasn’t been an opportunity to simply buy the PS5 from Media Markt, Amazon & Co. since the market launch. Rather, there are only individual, comparatively short-lasting sales campaigns for the Sony console. In view of this, we report at regular intervals about the upcoming chance to buy one of the coveted game consoles. In the current financial report from Sony, Playstation CEO Jim Ryan has now stated that he is talking about a stabilization of the situation.

In 2024, the Playstation 5 should overtake the PS4

However, the sales figures for the Playstation 5 are still behind the figures for the second year after the release of the predecessor Playstation 4. Sony only assumes that in 2024 it will – finally – be able to overtake the PS4 in terms of sales figures. In the coming year, the same number of PS5s should be delivered as in the third year of sales of the PS4. In order to achieve this, the company has positioned itself more broadly and now procures the components from several suppliers. After all, the Ukraine war and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic are putting a strain on the supply of components, keyword: lack of semiconductors. In Asia in particular, lockdowns, such as in Shanghai, make it particularly difficult to maintain supply chains. According to Sony, negotiations are currently underway for an optimized delivery route. However, Sony had to admit that the sales target for the PS5 was missed by 3.3 million units.

Since the outbreak of the global coronavirus pandemic, manufacturers worldwide have been struggling with a shortage of semiconductors. As a result of fewer orders, production was throttled back in 2020 before local protective measures against infections with Sars-Cov-2 ensured that the assembly lines had to stand still in many places. Intel, for example, now assumes that the chip crisis will last until 2024.
