Developer on the MMORPG Guild Wars 2 complains that a billion-dollar corporation refuses her $400

EiA former employee of ArenaNet, the developer of Guild Wars 2, complained on Twitter that billionaire NCSoft owed her $400. The company would refuse to pay them out, as the ex-cinematic animator describes on Twitter.

what is the situation The studio behind Guild Wars 2, ArenaNet, belongs to the billion-dollar company NCSoft, which can achieve high profits with mobile games in particular. Until recently, ArenaNet employee Da-Hee Im also worked, among other things she was involved in the cutscenes of the well-known MMORPG Guild Wars 2.

Now she says on Twitter that the company owes her $400 in salary and will no longer pay it out. The reason for this is that she left the company on May 27 and NCSoft is now allegedly no longer paying out the promised wage increase from April.

Why is this happening? The former developer explains on Twitter that salary increases at ArenaNet are paid retrospectively by NCSoft.

This means that in April, for example, you will receive a wage increase but will continue to receive your old salary. At the end of the year, the difference between the new and old wages is then paid out in one go.

According to Da-Hee Im, she received a pay rise on April 9, but it was already known that the animator would leave the company on May 27. Because of this, NCSoft, according to their own statements, now refuses to pay out the wage difference for the almost two months. It’s about $ 400, as she writes on Twitter.

“This is self-sabotage and really stupid”

Why the company is harming itself by doing so: The former developer goes on to explain on Twitter that NCSoft would not only harm employees but also itself with this strategy. In this way, the group would encourage employees not to tell anyone when they are leaving the company.

In the USA, where ArenaNet is based, there is no statutory period of notice, unlike in Germany. Unless otherwise contractually agreed with the employer, employees can disappear from one day to the next, which can lead to organizational difficulties for the company.

Denying employees such a payout when it is already certain that they will leave the company would encourage spontaneous departures. “It’s self-sabotage and really stupid. It doesn’t encourage people to tell the company, their team, or their manager before they leave.”

Why the complaints on Twitter? According to Im, the employer did not communicate with her that such a regulation even existed. It wouldn’t be in any of the employee handbooks either. “The way I see it, that policy was just a single point in a single slide of a presentation, and it was for managers only,” Im wrote on Twitter.

She closes the thread on Twitter rather sadly and says:

I will always love my colleagues at ArenaNet, but I will never forget that wanting to be polite and cooperative, I stayed with the company until May 27th only to be needlessly stabbed in the back. […] 4 years of memories completely ruined. And for what?

There is currently no comment from ArenaNet or NCSoft on the statements. We’ll keep you posted if that changes.
