Restricted EC card payment: Since Tuesday evening, only cash payment has been possible in some cases

Although there is now an update to fix the glitches when paying with a giro or credit card, it is taking time to distribute. As a result, EC card payment is not possible in a number of shops.

Since May 26, 2022, customers have not been able to pay with a debit or credit card at various German retailers. The shops affected include Aldi-Nord, Kaufland, Edeka, the Edeka subsidiary Netto and a few other shops. A fault in the Verifone H5000 payment devices is to blame. There is now an update that should fix the problem.

Update distribution is still ongoing

However takes the distribution of the update still, because the update can only be installed manually on site. According to Verifone, retailers can do this themselves or have a technician do this. Verifone payment terminals are used by the two payment service providers Payone and Concardis, among others. As a spokeswoman for Payone explains, it is assumed that the update distribution will take a few days.

According to Verifone, this is a “software malfunction”, although it is expressly not intended to be a security gap, according to the device manufacturer. Recently there have been repeated reports that the problems could be related to an expired certificate. Verifone denies this. Due to the disruption in the Verifone devices, an some retailers only pay with cash since payments via NFC are also processed via smartphones with the Verifone H5000 and are therefore currently no longer possible. In addition to paying for purchases, it is currently not possible to withdraw money in affected stores. According to the Canadian company Verifone, the H5000 is no longer sold as new, but the old reader can still be found in many shops – especially in Germany.
