Sega announces Mega Drive Mini 2, this time also with Mega CD games

Sonic the Hedgehog, released in 1991, was a stroke of luck for Sega. The rapid Jump'n'Run blossomed into a favorite with the public and made the blue racing hedgehog the Sega mascot.

In October 2019, Sega released the Mega Drive Mini, which contained 42 games. Overall, the device was probably quite a success, and we too thought the Mega Drive Mini was a real must-buy for all retro fans and nostalgics. Similar to Nintendo, which released an SNES Mini after their NES Classic Mini, Sega would now also like to offer a successor to their small retro console. The company announced the Mega Drive Mini 2, which is said to be able to play a total of 50 titles, in a live stream today, which unfortunately was only broadcast in Japanese. This includes not only Mega Drive titles, but also games from the Mega CD, some arcade ports, and “mysterious new projects” as well.

Mega Drive Mini 2 officially announced

The confirmed titles for the Mega Drive so far (buy now €247.95) Mini 2 already provide a good impression of what could be playable on the console.

  • Slipheed
  • Shining Force CD
  • SonicCD
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls
  • Popful Mail
  • Virtual Racing
  • Bonanza Bros
  • Shining in the dark
  • Thunder Force IV
  • Magical Taruruto
  • Fantasy Zone

Fantasy Zone is said to be a brand new Mega Drive port based on the successor Super Fantasy Zone. The device is scheduled to be released in Japan on October 27 at a price of around 70 euros. In addition, there will probably be a small Mega CD addon for the console, which should reflect the classic look of the Mega CD. This probably also comes with a miniature CD for Sonic the Hedgehog CD, and a small cartridge for Virtua Racer, as on the Official website of the Mega Drive Mini 2 can be seen. The addon will probably cost another 30 euros and will be purely cosmetic. The company has not yet commented on a western release, but with the popularity that the old Sega consoles are enjoying in the western market, hopefully Sega will not pass up the opportunity.
