Playstation 5: More than 20 million units sold worldwide

Sony has now sold more than 20 million Playstation 5 units. The company had nevertheless hoped to be able to sell more consoles so far, as there is corresponding demand. Now the production numbers are to be increased and those who have not been able to buy a PS5 so far can get a chance.

At the end of March, Sony had sold 19.3 million units of the Playstation 5 worldwide, and despite those record-breaking numbers, it noted that the company could have sold far more game consoles had it not been for the logistical problems of the pandemic. The next big milestone for the Japanese company has now been reached with 20 million units. Veronica Rogers, senior vice president, head of global sales and business operations at Sony, saw this as a positive development and nevertheless speaks of a coming strong increase in production numbers for the rest of the year.

The Playstation 5 is so popular compared to the Playstation 4 that Sony managed to sell 80,000 game consoles in 82 minutes in the year of release, while the Playstation 4 took a full nine days to do so. Still, the company has sold fewer Playstation 5s than Playstation 4s so far. That’s expected to change in 2023, the fourth year of the Playstation 5, and then it overtakes its predecessor.
