Geforce RTX 4080 / 4090: August release could be tight, finished samples only in July?

from Valentin Sattler
Supposedly, executable samples with AD102 GPUs will not be available until July, which could make it tight for a release of the RTX 4080 / 4090 in August. Nvidia’s board partners are also said to be developing with Ampere GPUs at the moment, since the AD102 has not yet been made available to them.

The first RX 6000 and RTX 3000 graphics cards will soon be celebrating their second birthday, so it’s high time for the release of the successor generations RX 7000 and RTX 4000. At least for the latter, a release window recently appeared in the rumor mill: Accordingly, the Geforce RTX 4090 should appear in August, followed by the Geforce RTX 4080 in September and the Geforce RTX 4070 in October.

Possible schedule

In this context, the Igor’s Lab website, with confirmation from the well-known leaker kopite7kimi, now points out that the new AD102 GPU is not yet available to Nvidia’s board partners. So far, they have had to continue working on their new (custom) designs with the current GA102 GPU, which stands in the way of final validation.

On top of that, Igor’s Lab suspects that the parts list for Nvidia’s first RTX 4000 graphics card will only be published this month, thus finalizing the reference design. The first samples are then to be produced and tested by mid-July, before a sample with functioning hardware and software is to be available for the first time in mid-July. If the schedule is right, the first useful leaks that are not based on simulations or estimates could appear from then on.

Last on topic: Rumors: RTX 4090 from August, RTX 4000 and RX 7000 will be sold at RRP

After further tests and the parallel BIOS development, mass production should not start until August or September, which would make a real release in August difficult. If the specified schedule is actually achieved, the respective test results should also play a role. If Nvidia discovers an error in the PCB design, the release of the RTX 4080 / 4090 could be delayed by a few weeks.
