Diablo Immortal - Where Does the Pay-2-Win Cost Really Come From?

To the mobile game Diablo Immortal is currently hailing great criticism. Stakes become perfidious Lootbox Mechanics and Pay-2-Win approaches that the community is now beginning to understand and reveal.

The hidden costs of the “free-2-play game” are now being hotly debated by the gaming community. The YouTuber Gregg2G explains in his video, for example, how hidden these pay-2-win mechanics really are, while Bellular News breaks down the general problem.

But to fully understand the subject, we must first understand what we are being asked to pay for in the first place. Because when we talk about Pay-2-Win, we’re talking not the cosmetic items, which of course also exist in this game. A Premium outfit costs around 20 euros (regular) to 25 euros (collectible).

Where does the pay-2-win cost come from in Diablo Immortal?

A game can only be pay-2-win if we can make our avatar stronger for money in order to gain an advantage over others who don’t. And we can definitely do that in Diablo Immortal.

The strength of a character consists of: to the level, the equipment and the gems.

The primary strength is first of all character level. This is leveled up quickly with many experience points or if you only collect a few experience points, leveled up slowly. There are various mechanics that get experience points faster. You buy here corresponding time savings. But that alone could not be called Pay-2-Win.

Then why is Diablo Immortal Pay-2-Win? The equipment, on the other hand, has a level that is in the Sum the equipment power definitely. Pieces of gear, such as weapons, have certain attributes that contribute to overall strength.

AND the most important component is the integration of Gems in your equipment that directly affects your gear strength. So these can be combined with the equipment to strengthen it. And this is where the pay-2-win and loot box mechanics come into play. Because these gems can be “purchased” or drawn like in the lottery.

The problem with the Legendary Gems

The main problem with this is the Legendary Gems, which have a significant influence on the strength. And where do we get these rare gems from?

  • Elder Rifts – Use Emblems to get Legendary Gems. Rare emblems bring only a small chance Legendary Emblems however, a high chance
  • Pretty stupid: We only get 1-2 Legendary Emblems per month via F2P
  • A Legendary Emblem is purchasable, they cost 160 Eternal Orbs, so about 2.50 euros each

It should be said that legendary emblems a 5 star version can match while rare emblems at 2 stars curled are. And stars are important:

  • Stars scale effects and stats…
  • but with 1x Rare Emblem lies the Probability only at 2.5%to get a 2-star gem.
  • 5-Star Gems will “never see Free-2-Play users,” says Gregg2G
  • And those 5-star gems can go up too Rank 10 leveled up become (which means we need them multiple times)
  • Important: These gems increase eg the damage and life (important in PvP)

Why is this like loot boxes?

So we need the very rare gems, but we can’t just buy them. Because we remember: we only buy the emblems. The gems drop randomly in the elder portalsif we the purchased emblems start and that’s why the whole thing is already again gambling.

Like loot boxes: In short, we shop, for example Legendary Emblem for the Elder Portal and then chance decides, which gem comes out at the end. Because there are gems of different types and with different statuses. If the Legendary Gem doesn’t appeal to you this time, you’ll have to go through the procedure again – ergo pay again and succumb to luck.

The problem with that Pay-2-Win is mainly used in PvP evident, because all of this is reflected, among other things, in the damage and life reflected, since the Gems can increase the base attributes percentage (see picture).

In PvP, the equipment, the level and Paragon level do not count directly. They have an upper limit. But the bonuswhich we of the Legendary Gems obtained is not limited here. who paid more for gems (i.e. emblems in advance). has, has loud probability better gems and therefore also distributes more.

And there is also a system that improves your skills, for example by using the Cool down a specific one class ability minimized. This Awakening system comes on top of it, which in turn makes the whole thing so opaque. So this is an extremely opaque pay-2-win system, with problems only becoming apparent late in the late game.
