HoloLens 2: AR glasses for cars from Microsoft and Volkswagen
Augmented Reality from Microsoft and Volkswagen
Together with Volkswagen, Microsoft is testing the AR glasses HoloLens 2 in the car. When driving, it should overlay the real streetscape and show obstacles, traffic jams and weather forecasts.
News
Some car manufacturers try to integrate as many sophisticated displays as possible into the cockpit to support the journey with warnings and intelligent route guidance. Microsoft and Volkswagen are taking a different approach and are cooperating on their model test.
To do this, the driver puts on the augmented reality glasses HoloLens 2 from Microsoft, which connects to the car electronics. Now the two constantly exchange information about where the car is currently driving or whether there are any obstacles, such as people on the road. The HoloLens displays all relevant data and inserts it into the real street scene that is in front of you in your field of vision.
Of course, obstacles that are only visible later, such as traffic jams or weather forecasts, are also displayed on the lenses. For tourist trips there are shopping recommendations or descriptions of sights. Of course, there are numerous other possible uses.
The teams have been working together since 2018 and have already solved various usability problems. Now Microsoft wants to enter the integration phase.
