MMORPG Guild Wars 2 surprisingly reworks old content from 2012 – raises hopes for new dungeons

Guild Wars 2 started with the 2012 release with eight dungeons, each with a story mode and three to four harder paths. Since then, however, no new dungeon has come into play, but the focus has been on other types of instances. A surprising change on June 7th raises hopes for new dungeons in the future.

What exactly has been changed? With the latest update, a major overhaul for the old dungeons from 2012 came into play. So far, each dungeon had its own currency and if you wanted the special armor skins, you had to complete the respective dungeon. This has changed now:

  • There is now a new global dungeon currency called Tales of Dungeon Exploration. All old currencies will be converted to these.
  • You must also have completed the story and a research path at least once in order to get the respective skins of the dungeons. However, this is now account-wide and no longer per character.
  • There is now an additional rare gear reward at the end of each dungeon run.

For many, the change comes out of nowhere and is a bit surprising. Because the dungeons have only been adjusted in very few points since 2012. For years, however, many players have been waiting for new dungeons, since the content for 10 players is not necessarily to their liking. And it is precisely these players who now have hope again.

The new expansion End of Dragons was only released in February. Here you can find out all about it:

Guild Wars 2 relies on various instances, but not on classic dungeons

What is it about the instances in general? Guild Wars 2 offers different types of instances, but they are only updated infrequently:

  • Dungeons are classically designed for groups of 5 players. Their paths are a bit longer and usually tell a small, self-contained story. There has been no new content here since 2012.
  • Fractals are also aimed at 5 players, but are a bit shorter and have a scaling system. They range in difficulty from 1 to 100, with each level having a specific fractal that repeats over time. Especially at the higher levels, fractals are significantly more difficult than dungeons. The last new fractal appeared in September 2020.
  • Raids are aimed at groups of 10 players and are particularly crisp. They offer the greatest challenge and sometimes also additional challenge modes. However, the last new raid appeared in June 2019.
  • Currently the focus is on the Assault missions. These are instances for 10 players, in which usually only one boss is waiting for the players. This boss fight is quite easy in normal mode, but the new attack missions in End of Dragons also have a challenge mode that is almost reminiscent of raids.

What speaks for new dungeons? Many players are wondering why ArenaNet is making such a change to Guild Wars 2 right now. There was no real reason for it. on reddit it is therefore speculated that dungeons may return with the new Living World.

User Hoojiwat, on the other hand, is already fantasizing about a dungeon in the Raisu Palace that will be brought with Living World Season 6.

However, the first users are slowing down this hype again. Dreamtrain, for example, writes that this change will probably be made because the Steam release is coming up soon. This should contain the chaos of the many currencies and make the game easier to understand for newcomers.

Some also criticize that only certain dungeons with easy paths are now run and the other dungeons are dying out. That’s not a good experience for new players either.

Dragon bounce and adjustments for DirectX 11

What else did the patch bring? In addition to the adjustments to the dungeons, the patch mainly brought bug fixes, small QoL changes and the Dragon Bash event, which runs until June 28th:

  • In the Dragon Bash you can participate in various activities in Hoelbrak, including a race, the Moa Race, the Dragon Arena, and the Hologram Rush. New rewards include the Dragon Bone Weapons, two new Miniatures, and two new Guild Decorations.
  • The Daily Achievement categories from each Icebrood Saga episode have been merged into a single category.
  • Windowed fullscreen is now applied to the next monitor instead of the main monitor, which is also what gamers have been asking for since 2012.
  • The training grounds for the raids have been moved to Lion’s Arch and no longer require you to be in a squad.

What do you say about the changes? Do they make the dungeons more interesting for you or are you afraid that only certain paths will now be walked because they all bring the same rewards? Feel free to write it in the comments.

In general, Guild Wars 2 is currently going through an interesting development. It also recently released content players have been waiting for since 2013:
