Our CPU & GPU combinations 2022 | hardware harmony

from Raphael Voetter
Which graphics card goes with which processor? What are the effects of the resolution? Since hardware can be combined almost freely, the optimal pairing of CPU and GPU is not easy to find – but don’t worry, we will help you! In this video we show concrete examples and give rules of thumb.

With increasing resolution, the graphics card takes on an increasingly prominent role – this applies without exception. For example, if you play primarily in the Ultra HD resolution, a cheap quad-core CPU such as the Ryzen 5 1400 or older versions such as the fourth or fifth generation Intel Core will suffice. This applies to very CPU-limited games like Anno 1800, Planet Zoo or Kingdom Come: Deliverance, even in lower resolutions. Of course, the fastest graphics card or the most powerful processor is of no use if other things limit it beforehand. For example, if you plan to play on an old magnetic hard drive (HDD), you will have to put up with reloading jerks and long loading times, even with the fastest rest of the system.

We have extensively tested which graphics cards harmonize with which processors and what needs to be considered with current games and components. Find out the bottom line of the observations in the latest video from the PCGH testing lab. Probably the most important and at the same time most uncomfortable finding is that basically every graphics card is too slow. Even the budget version with six cores of modern processor architectures is able to utilize a high-end graphics card in Full HD and WQHD. The particularly fine resolutions Ultrawide-QHD and especially Ultra HD increase the GPU problems, here an old quad-core is usually enough for a balance. The probability that the graphics card is also slowing down what is happening in your system is therefore high – unless you mostly play titles that focus on processor power. Various pearls of the construction genre become extremely CPU-heavy, especially in the advanced game, and therefore behave somewhat differently than most other games.
