The Steve Ballmer Era Begins (PCGH Retro, June 11)

The Steve Ballmer era begins – that happened on June 11th. Every day, PC Games Hardware dares to take a look back at the young but eventful history of the computer.

1980: He later became one of the most powerful men in the world: Steve Ballmer, who on June 11, 1980 accepted an invitation from his college friend Bill Gates and thus joined Microsoft. Ballmer is only the 24th employee of the young company and the first real manager of the company – and he comes at just the right time, because in 1981 an unprecedented success story begins at Microsoft with the delivery of DOS for the IBM PC. The IPO in the same year made Ballmer a millionaire, and years later, as a multiple billionaire, he was one of the richest people in America. Ballmer has held many positions within the company over the years, even doing television commercials at one point; finally, in 2000, he took over the position of CEO from Gates. Ballmer achieved a high degree of notoriety through his critical statements about competitors, Linux or Apple – as well as through downright insane public appearances.
