No More Internet Explorer for the Mac (PCGH Retro, June 13)

Microsoft is discontinuing Mac Explorer – that happened on June 13th. Every day, PC Games Hardware dares to take a look back at the young but eventful history of the computer.

… 2003: In August 1997, Microsoft and the ailing company Apple entered into a cooperation – Gates paid 150 million for shares in the company and committed to supplying software for Mac OS for at least five years. Among other things, the new partners agreed that Microsoft should supply the future standard web browser for the Mac system, an adapted version of Internet Explorer. At that time, Microsoft was still in the middle of the browser war against Netscape and could use the additional market share from Apple users. But six years later, this fight is won – and Microsoft loses interest in the Mac, for which there is now an Apple alternative in the form of the Safari browser. As a result, Microsoft is stopping development of Mac Explorer for OS X this June 13th, the highest version number was 5.23. However, MS software is still available for the Macintosh: Office 2008 for Mac.
