D&D: A must have! The most important books
Want to play Dungeons and Dragons but don’t know which books to use? The problem with this: Do a search for Dungeons and Dragons books in your favorite online search engine. You’ll probably feel overwhelmed after a short scroll by the sheer volume of works on offer. And the books aren’t exactly cheap either, so that “Once everything, please” isn’t really an option. That’s why we’ve put together a guide for you that will lead you safely through the book jungle of D&D e5.

The starter set
For absolute beginners who want to take their first steps into the Dungeons and Dragons universe, a starter set is a good choice. It contains a rule book with the most important basic rules, an adventure book with a simple campaign (“The Mines of Phandelver”), six multi-sided dice and five pre-made character sheets. This is perfect for trying out the game with your friends (for four to six players).
The base set
Apart from that, there is also the base set, which in general is very similar to the starter set. In the base set you will find a game master screen, 11 dice, a map, magic item cards, a guide with the most important rules, six blank character sheets and the adventure book “Dragon of the Ice Needle”. The main difference to the starter set is that the basic set can be played with two to six players. Two players? That means you only need one game master and one other player. So you can test D&D on a small scale. This is made possible by the so-called sidekicks, who accompany the heroic character through the adventure.
The three basic rules
If you already know that D&D is your thing and you want to delve deeper, then there are three essential books we recommend you read. This holy trinity should be possessed by every game master. It is absolutely not necessary for each player to have their own Player’s Guide, but a copy should be on any D&D table.

- Game Master’s Guide: In this book gamemasters will find all the information they need to run a campaign. Especially if you don’t want to use a campaign book, but want to develop a story yourself, this book is highly recommended.
It includes tips on how to balance battles, numerous magic items, advice on creating puzzles, and explanations on how to create your own worlds and structures for exciting adventures.
- Player Guide: The Player’s Guide lists all of the rules you need to play D&D. You’ll read how to build and level up your characters, get information about all classes and the most prominent races in the game, and find a list of the most popular spells and how they work. Hero backgrounds are dealt with in the same way as equipment and talents.
- Monster Guide: The Monster Handbook is an almanac detailing the more familiar creatures that roam the worlds of D&D. It contains monster characteristics and descriptions of the creatures and their backgrounds and behaviors. With new monsters added with each new campaign and with the expansion volumes, the Monster Handbook isn’t an all-encompassing work describing everything that crawls and flees, but it’s a good place to start.
