Duality is the newest dungeon in Destiny 2 that has been purposely made more difficult, as revealed by the lead designer.

With the current Season 17, Season of the Haunted, Bungie brought a brand new dungeon to Destiny 2.

The “Duality” dungeon noticeably increased the difficulty. Too far for some.

But the developer deliberately set the difficulty so high, as design lead Brian Frank revealed to GamesRadar.

As Frank explains, they generally wanted to be more aggressive and not just deliver content according to a certain formula. After all, it is also a top activity. That’s where the demands increase.

“I knew from the start that we were going to make the game more aggressive. I don’t want the raid and dungeon content to be really formulaic. We always try to present something new. And this content is high end content with high aspirations, so I think it makes sense to ask a lot of players. They keep getting more powerful with all the build crafting elements, so I think we need to give them challenges to test their skills.”

“It was a conscious decision not to lower the difficulty level too much. We saw a lot of engagement with Wake of Greed, and I think it felt a little lighter in the end, so the team is just experimenting with the limits of what it feels like to make something heavier or relax. I don’t think it’s necessarily the standard. We will move within this spectrum.”

Feedback on the dungeon goes both ways overall. He “saw a fairly balanced number of supporters and opponents” and believes that this “addresses a wide range of players.”

It’s successfully raised the bar for this type of content, which Frank says also gives the rewards a certain exclusivity.

It was therefore deliberately decided not to set the difficulty too low. A Warden gets stronger over time anyway, which also makes the dungeon easier to master over time.
