Escape from Tarkov is considered a tough hardcore shooter - now it's suddenly raining loot from the sky

In Escape from Tarkov, one of your big goals is to collect loot and improve your equipment. This is usually associated with a high risk, since if you die in-game you will lose all the equipment you have taken with you and the possible loot is few and far between. But now it’s suddenly raining loot from the sky in Tarkov. What’s behind it?

What is currently happening in Escape from Tarkov? In Escape from Tarkov (short: EFT) there is currently an increased number of so-called airdrops. These are supply drops that are dropped by an airplane over the city of Tarkov and contain heaps of loot. In addition to the strongest gear such as armor, this loot can also include weapons and the like.

Not only an increased number of airdrops are new for EFT players. Battlestate Games recently introduced Escape from tarkov Arena:

Pre-wipe event with airdrop

Why is it raining Loot? The airdrops and the associated loot rain are the latest pre-wipe event for the hardcore shooter. These are in-game events that take place just before a wipe.

You can recognize an upcoming airdrop by one or – especially during the event – several airplanes in the sky of Tarkov, which drop the loot boxes.

Why are there pre-wipe events? In addition to heaps of loot, the current event promotes the in-game economy and, above all, the PvP aspect of the shooter.

EFT players currently have to expect their opponents to lie in wait near an airdrop, waiting for someone to claim the loot. The greed for loot also ensures that players open fire when someone else is also near the coveted crates.

“Ready for the wipe?”

What is a wipe? On a wipe, games like Escape from Tarkov reset all player progress and let them start the game over. A player’s accumulated equipment, completed missions, and achieved level are gone after a wipe.

Wiping the shooter will restore it to the state it was in when you bought it or started it for the first time. However, this does not only mean loss. A player’s basic equipment, which depends on the EFT version purchased, will be fully restored including weapons, backpacks, armor, ammo, etc.

When is the next wipe? There is currently no exact date for the upcoming wipe, although it cannot be far off.

In Escape from Tarkov, the wipes used to take place about every 6 months. The most recent wipe was on December 12, 2021, the penultimate on June 30, 2021.

Studio head and EFT game director Nikita Buyanov also recently hinted at the next reset on Twitter, asking if players were ready for the wipe.

Nikita Buyanov via Twitter: “Ready for the wipe?”

Escape from Tarkov has been an extremely popular shooter for some time and often gets high viewership on Twitch as a result of a wipe.

The special thing about it is that EFT is not suitable for every player due to its hardcore gameplay and the associated difficulty and is anything but beginner-friendly.

What do you think of Escape from Tarkov? Are you interested in the hardcore shooter with its pre-wipe events and total reset, or are you more into the other titles in the 15 best multiplayer shooters of 2022?
