Anyone who saw the first Final Fantasy 16 trailer might remember the cute little dog that glimpsed for a brief moment. He only barked briefly and looked cute, but otherwise it was very quiet around him for a long time. Too quiet! But fortunately, an interview has now been carried out to find out what this little bundle of joy is all about and we finally know his name. It also looks like he’s going to be with us a little longer.
More of a wolf, the Final Fantasy 16 dog has a name
That’s what it’s about: Final Fantasy 16 was launched back in 2020 with an impressive announcement trailer. In it we see the main characters Clive and Joshua, of course, but also this cute four-legged friend with fluffy fur and a cute little barker. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, watch the trailer again:
Final Fantasy 16 – Next part of the RPG series announced
The dog is called Torgal: In an interview with Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida, IGN has now found out that this dog also has a name that is Torgal. In addition, the animal is said to be a wolf rather than a dog. But the producer didn’t really want to answer the question as to whether Torgal is also a member of the party:
“You’ll just have to wait and see. We’ll have more info on the parties soon.”
That sounds now not exactly after a specific rejection. Dogs have also played an important role throughout Final Fantasy’s long history – and have also been actively involved in battles as party members. We remember, for example, Lunafreya’s Umbra, the Doberman Interceptor from Final Fantasy 6 or Darkstar from Final Fantasy 7. Sounds like Torgal is following in their footsteps.
This also goes with the rest: According to producer Naoki Yoshida, one or more AI companions can help us in Final Fantasy 16’s battles.

When is Final Fantasy 16 coming? Unfortunately, there is no exact start date for the PS5 RPG yet. But at least the release period was limited to 2023. To learn more about companions, an AI buddy, and the “gigantic range of skills”, we recommend our own big GamePro interview with the producer.
How do you like Torgal, the cute dog? Do you think we can pet him too?
