With the start of the revised PS Plus service, Sony now also offers a total of three different subscription levels in Germany. The Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers are tiered in price and offer different benefits.

If you want to take out or extend a PS Plus subscription, you could previously do so with gift cards. These were available in retail in different variations (3 months, 6 months, 12 months) and contained a code that, when entered, unlocked your own account for PS Plus for the corresponding period.

The gift cards say goodbye

These gift cards will no longer be available in the future. This was confirmed by Sony Germany’s PR when asked by GamePro.de. Attempts are currently being made to take the old PS Plus gift cards out of the market.

The reason for the gift card off: With the current three-tier model of PS Plus and the different lockable periods, the range of gift cards would be quite confusing.

Instead, Sony will only use PS Store prepaid cards in the future. These should be available in a wide range of amounts and can be used both for purchases of digital content in the PS Store and for the purchase of PS Plus.

Credit cards are not mandatory: Of course, it will still be possible to take out or extend a PS Plus subscription directly in the PS Store using a stored payment option such as PayPal.

Old gift cards don’t become useless

Anyone who still finds an old PS Plus or PS Now gift card at home in the future or buys it normally in stores does not have to worry that they will become completely useless with the switch to the new PS Plus. Rather, old card codes can also be redeemed without any problems, but you have to pay attention to the corresponding conversion rates.

For example, 1 month PS Plus becomes 1 month PS Plus Essential, or alternatively 3 weeks Extra or 2.5 weeks Premium. You can read more about this in our article:
