Blizzard has commented on the possible transfer of loot boxes and currency from Overwatch to Overwatch 2.

On October 4, 2022, Overwatch 2 will launch as a free-to-play title via Early Access, replacing the current live service from that point on. The hero shooter uses a new seasonal structure with battle passes. The loot boxes known from the predecessor will no longer exist.

Commercial Lead Jon Spector now explains what will happen to unopened loot boxes and currency from Overwatch after the launch of Overwatch 2:

“We will provide a more detailed explanation on all of these topics before Overwatch 2 goes live in October. Now, to give you a quick answer, these existing currencies (credits, OWL tokens, and Contest Points) will come with you to Overwatch 2.”

“We are not transferring loot boxes to Overwatch 2. Prior to launch, any unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened with all content credited directly to your account.”

“OW1 Credits are coming with you to OW2, but our new virtual currency will be the primary currency and there will be things in OW2 that cannot be purchased with these OW1 Credits.”
