AMD FSR 2.0: Official plugin for Unreal Engine 4 and 5 released

from Valentin Sattler
AMD has released an official plugin that brings FSR 2.0 to Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5. This means that corresponding games can easily be supplemented with the modern upscaling process.

After Nvidia presented DLSS in 2018, AMD brought it with them last year Fidelity FX Super Resolution (FSR) launched its own upscaling technique. In contrast to Nvidia’s solution, the original version of FSR, FSR 1.0, didn’t promise quite as good results, but it did promise independence from the GPU used and, on top of that, easy implementation for game developers.

New plugins for FSR 2.0

With the new FSR 2.0 version presented in May, AMD then significantly revised the technology used. Like DLSS, FSR now also uses a temporal component for upscaling, so the software can access previously calculated images. This in turn requires customized access to the engine’s rendering pipeline, so existing implementations of FSR 1.0 could not simply be replaced with FSR 2.0.

To make the transition easier for developers, AMD has now released its own FSR 2.0 plugin for Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5. According to the instructions published on GPU Open, the Unreal Engine can be supplemented with FSR 2.0 with just a few clicks. Registration with AMD is not necessary for this, so the technology can also be used by hobby developers. The same was also the case with the previously released plugin for FSR 1.0, which AMD continues to offer for Unreal Engine 4.

Due to the availability of the FSR 2.0 plugin, more and more games are likely to be upgraded to FSR 2.0 in the coming weeks and months, for which the developers did not want to put up with the additional development effort without a plugin. Developers who rely on a different or even their own engine, on the other hand, must continue to implement it themselves. If you want to set FSR for corresponding titles without an update, you can alternatively use Radeon Super Resolution.
