An AI has learned to play Minecraft - World domination is not far away

How would you feel after 70,000 hours of Minecraft videos on YouTube? A new AI from OpenAI learned to play Minecraft in this way.

The newest development by the company specializing in AIs, a video pre-training algorithm (VPT), allows an AI to learn by watching.

A big leap for Kis

OpenAI’s AI plays in the same environment as humans and uses commands that correspond to mouse and keyboard interactions.

Among other things, the AI could learn to cut down trees, make wooden boards, swim, hunt, cook and much more. Eventually she was able to craft a diamond pickaxe. A human player needs around 20 minutes and 24,000 actions for this.

Although it is of course not enough for the AI to just look at the material. There is no information on how the actions shown were carried out.

Contractors helped pick up and label basic Minecraft skills. This resulted in another algorithm that provided a total of around 70,000 hours of YouTube material with suitable keyboard and mouse inputs.

With this additional information, the AI was able to learn how to play by watching these videos.

So far the AI has only been tested with Minecraft, but given the open game concept and the rather basic inputs, it is believed that it could also be used for more general computing.
