Valve warns you should never do this with your Steam deck

Is AMD working on a Ryzen APU for the Steam Deck 2? (1)

Valve’s Steam Deck has been in the hands of many players for a few months now, and although there are different versions offering different configurations and therefore different performances, some users are still not satisfied with the power of their device.

Steam deck mod significantly shortens device lifespan

So did modder Belly Jelly, who found out that you can pack a larger SSD into the Steam deck if you make some sacrifices, as among others PCGamer reported. However, users who are not satisfied with the 512GB from Valve should not immediately get a larger SSD, because like Valve Hardware Designer Lawrence Yang reported on Twitter, modding the Steam Deck isn’t such a good idea.

“Please don’t do that. The charging IC gets very hot and nearby thermal pads shouldn’t be moved. In addition, most 2242 m.2 drives draw more power and get hotter than what the deck is designed for. This one Mod seems to work, but significantly shortens deck lifespan.”
