There are footballers like Buffon (44), Ibrahimovic (40) and Ronaldo (37) who never seem to stop playing football. But these players remain the exception, with many players paying tribute to age and retiring this summer or moving to leagues that FIFA simply hasn’t licensed.

We show you 5 famous footballers who will be missing in FIFA 23.

Sergio Aguero

This is Sergio “Kun” Aguero: The Argentine striker is best known for his time at Manchester City. There he became a club legend and won everything there is to win, apart from the Champions League. He then moved to FC Barcelona in the Spanish league and signed a contract until 2023.

But he could not fulfill this. Agüero, who was 33 at the time, had to end his career in December 2021 due to heart problems. So his FUT 22 card will remain his last for now.

James Rodriguez

This is James Rodriguez: The Colombian had a brilliant career which he crowned by winning two Champions League titles at Real Madrid. The attacking midfielder then moved to FC Bayern Munich, FC Everton and then to al-Rayyan SC in Qatar. However, he could no longer build on the achievements of his early days.

Now the former superstar is targeting a move to Botafogo in Brazil at the age of 30. And given that Brazil’s top division has been absent from FIFA for the past few years, there’s a strong possibility that there won’t be a FUT 23 card from ‘James’.

Marcel Schmelzer

This is Marcel Schmelzer: In recent years, things have gone quiet about the former German international, who only played for Borussia Dortmund as a professional. In the course of his career he won two German championships with BVB and the DFB Cup three times.

Now the 34-year-old left-back is hanging up his boots and will no longer be playable in FIFA 23. But in FIFA 22 Ultimate Team you can currently get a really strong end-of-era from Schmelzer.

Martin Hinteregger

This is Martin Hinteregger: The Austrian central defender played for Red Bull Salzburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Augsburg and most recently for Eintracht Frankfurt. His greatest success was undoubtedly last season’s spectacular UEFA Europa League win.

Now the only 29-year-old surprisingly ends his professional career and will therefore no longer appear on the pitch or in FIFA 23.

Jermain Defoe

This is Jermain Defoe: The England striker legend enjoyed his most successful spells at Tottenham and Sunderland, where he scored numerous goals and laid on. Now EA is honoring the 39-year-old at the end of his career with a strong end-of-era card in FUT 22, as he announced his retirement.

Of course, in the long run, it’s possible that some of these players will return to FIFA – as an icon card in FIFA 23.
