Sudoku comes from Japan. Or not?

That the popular number puzzle comes from Japan is a widespread assumption – but not entirely correct. Again and again early forms of similar puzzles are mentioned as forerunners. However, the first documented publication of a Sudoku is the american Howard Garns attributed.

The riddle was called the riddle book when it was first published in 1979 Dell Pencil Puzzles & Word Games nor number place. Apparently, the puzzles weren’t a hit in the US back then.

Why Sudoku is not always called Sudoku in Japan

However, the puzzle boxes only achieved their international breakthrough when the Japanese publisher Nicoli started spreading number puzzles in the mid-1980s. This is where the “Number Places” were named Sudokuwhich is the abbreviation for “Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru” and means “number must appear only once”.

Foreign visitors took the puzzles with them and made them known and loved worldwide as Sudoku. The publisher had this abbreviation protected by copyright. In Japan itself, Sudokus are often called “Number Places”, as in the American original. In most other countries, as well as in Germany, you cannot protect the names of puzzle shapes by copyright.
