Sonic Frontiers: Switch version game scenes, new areas finally shown

Sonic Frontiers (Plattformer) von Sega

Again and again Sonic. The new hedgehog adventure is still being discussed months before release. This time there’s gameplay from the Switch version and a look at the cyberspace areas.

The “realistic” look of the open game world from Sonic Frontiers has already received a lot of criticism – for many gamers, the backgrounds seem lifeless and fit the typical Sonic feeling just as badly as the futuristic enemies. The Switch version shown in the new trailer from the Nintendo Direct mini-show obviously looks a lot blurrier and coarser; plus less liquid. We’ll find out in the test at the latest whether the latter aspect in particular has an effect on the gaming experience.

But more classic Sonic feeling?

In addition to speeding action in the open world and a few looks at the (still) terribly boring-looking fights, we’re happy about the first impressions from the so-called “cyberspace” areas. Sonic enters these stages seemingly via magical portals – and then suddenly lands in a sky level full of grind rails, on the highway (Sonic Adventure 2 lets say great) or a reinterpretation of the green hill stage in 3D. And that immediately makes you want to grab the pad yourself.

Sega still doesn’t make an appointment, again we are stalled with the information “Holiday 2022” (in German: 4th quarter). Then Sonic Frontiers will appear for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and the Switch.
