Finally defender! In FIFA 22, Mario Gomez of all people is supposed to prevent goals – and he’s really good at it

Mario Gomez is actually the epitome of a goalscorer. But now the FUT Hero has received a card in FIFA 22 that condemns him to prevent goals. Crazy, but not bad at all!

Who is Mario Gomez? Mario Gomez should still be known to most football fans, because his career ended not so long ago. As an active footballer, he first went hunting for goals for VfB Stuttgart, then for Bayern, Florence, Besiktas Istanbul, Wolfsburg and finally again for Stuttgart.

He was known as a dangerous goalscorer who scored goals, especially in the penalty area, with a short movement, a surprising header or a powerful finish. He also went chasing goals in the national team – but unfortunately he caught one or two black days there. In some cases, images of missed major opportunities hung behind him.

“Thwarting goals” is actually not something a striker likes to do. But in FIFA 22 Gomez has now received a card with which he is supposed to do exactly that.

Shapeshifter Mario Gomez gets a whole new role

What is this card? The “Shapeshifters” event is currently running, in which different players get completely new positions and changed values. The new “Team 3” also included some of the “FUT heroes”, i.e. players from days gone by. Gomez is one of them.

And anyone who used to make fun of Gomez preventing goals rather than scoring them can now look forward to a new card: Here’s Mario Gomez as a central defender.

The card is this good: In fact, Gomez has all the stats you want in a brutal centre-back. He has 90 pace, 95 defense and 93 physique. He also still has his high 91 Shooting Rating, which sets him apart as a forward.

Gomez, who sometimes seems a bit sluggish as a striker in FIFA 22, could actually fill the central defender position perfectly with these values. And: His card will also be changed to Serie A. This makes him an ideal match for what is currently perhaps the best central defender in FIFA 22.

A combination of Chiellini and Gomez should actually be really difficult for opposing strikers to overcome. It also offers good access to Bundesliga tickets – and there are a few of those in the new team.
