Astro Colony Getting Ready on Steam: What's It All About?

from Alexander Ney
Astro Colony wants to combine Factorio’s industrial automation with Space Engineers’ destructible voxels. The project’s Kickstarter campaign was a success, and the release of the first-person sci-fi city-building game is certain. The title has now appeared on Steam, but the game description is brief. We already know a little more.

With Astro Colony Polish developer Terad Games not only has its first, but also a rather interesting project in the pipeline. It’s a first-person sci-fi city building game that seeks to merge the industrial automation of strategy hit Factorio with the “endless” voxel universe of Space Engineers. More specifically, Astro Colony is about building efficient space colonies on various asteroids that can be freely explored. However, the focus of the game is the construction of automated conveyor systems and the fulfillment of the colonists’ needs. After successful Kickstarter funding in July 2021, there is now a playable demo from Astro Colony available on Steam. The developers have targeted the third quarter of 2022 as the release date for the full version.

Astro Colony: 70 unique technologies

In Astro Colony, asteroids are of particular importance, because the space chunks are not just built on. No, in order to get the required building materials, small asteroids floating around have to be dismantled (at least initially) using different tools. At least 70 unique technologies can be made from the building material obtained – so the constantly growing factory facilities will probably not look monotonous. Interesting: Among the equipment that can be built there are even extremely powerful drives that set the populated asteroid in motion (“Greetings from the wandering earth”). Other astronauts can be recruited to speed up the extraction of raw materials and the construction of industrial plants. As I said, however, they have their needs, which basically include board and lodging. Of course, that already smells like a multiplayer mode, and so in addition to the classic single-player mode, a cooperative online mode is actually available. However, it is not yet known how many cronies this game can ultimately be played with.

If you don’t want to wait any longer until Astro Colony is released, you have an early access alternative. The 2020 will appear in Steam’s early access Satisfactory looks a lot like the forthcoming game from Terad Games. Because here, too, everything revolves around the establishment of automated space colonies “from the ego perspective with a pinch of exploration and combat” – in obviously high quality. Satisfactory currently receives approval from 97 percent of all players, resulting in an “extremely positive”.
