Passion Shouldn't Be Toxic: God Of War Studio With Emotional Appeal To Players

from Alexander Ney
After the last installment of Sony’s State of Play failed to reveal God of War Ragnarök’s release date, “fans” of the series reached out to producer Estelle Tigani about it – with penis pics offering in exchange for information. Creative Director Cory Barlog then rightly posted an angry tweet – now the developer Santa Monica Studio has also appealed to the relevant part of the community.

Santa Monica Studio, the developers behind God of War Ragnarök, appealed to the toxic part of the community with a tweet. The addressees had previously harassed God of War producer Estelle Tigani with images of male privates – which they offered in exchange for information on the action game’s release date. The studio commented on this by saying: “Every single person at Santa Monica Studio works to create a game that we’re proud of and hope you’ll enjoy once it’s released. Our fans inspire us, and we understand the passion and desire for more information. But that passion shouldn’t be toxic or come at the expense of someone’s dignity. Let’s celebrate our community by treating each other, every gamer and every developer, with respect.”

“When did that ever work for you?!”

Estelle Tigani herself countered on Twitter on June 30: “Pro tip: if you send me tail pics and ask for God of War Ragnarok’s release date, I won’t reveal the date. To the people who do this, when has this ever worked for you?!” Creative Director Cory Barlog also expressed his anger via the short message service. “Are you kidding me now?”, the American raged: “I can’t believe I even have to say this but don’t fucking send penis pics to anyone on this team or anyone in this industry. They work their ass off for them [Videospiele] to do for you. Show some fucking respect.” Such hostilities are – unfortunately – by no means new for the God of War team. When God of War Ragnarok was pushed back to 2022, some fans responded with misogynist messages to video game author Alanah Pearce.

How thin the varnish of civilization is was also shown in the case of Hello Games, among other things. The developers of No Man’s Sky received death threats after the release of the apparently unfinished space exploration game, forcing the studio to relocate its headquarters. Recently it also hit the well-known adventure developer Ron Gilbert (Maniac Mansion), who was attacked on social media because of the graphic style of the new edition of Return to Monkey Island. Gilbert then decided to stop posting updates about the project permanently.
