Steam: Linux on the rise, Windows 10 on the decline

from Maximilian Hohm
In the Steam hardware and software survey, Linux has a distribution of 1.18 percent and was thus able to expand its market share. However, the growth does not seem to come from changing Microsoft users, but mainly from Steam Deck buyers, since “SteamOS Holo” is Linux-based. Read more about this below.

The Steam Hardware and Software Survey gives a good overview of the PCs and other devices that players use on Steam. Contrary to what many enthusiasts assume, most gamers still play with a quad-core CPU, only have 16 GiB of RAM and a Geforce GTX 1060, which should still be sufficient for the typical Full HD resolution. The most used operating system, which is now continuously losing users, is Windows 10, although Windows 11 is already installed on more than 20 percent of devices.

With a Windows share of over 96 percent, other operating systems are actually only marginal phenomena. At around 2.5 percent, OSX is installed more than twice as often as Linux, which is only found on 1.18 percent of all PCs with Steam. 1.18 percent may not sound like much, but it’s the highest level for Linux in a long time. If you were to go by absolute numbers based on the active user accounts, there would have to be 1,557,600 Steam players playing on Linux.

Around 11.4 percent of Linux users rely on Arch Linux, 10.1 percent on Manjaro Linux, while Ubuntu 22.04 and 20.04 each have a market share of just under 10 percent. However, the reason for the increase is “SteamOS Holo”, the operating system of the Steam Deck, which is also based on Linux. It has already increased its market share from about 5 percent to 7 percent of Linux users in the last month and should continue to increase when Steam decks finally become widely available.
