Game Culture: Over Jump: Indie Remake of Sega Rally in Unreal Engine 5

Sega Rally Championship is almost 30 years old – for an early 3D game, the off-road milestone has aged exceptionally. Now the cult racer is being recreated with the Unreal Engine 5.

Alessandro Schiassi, who was born in Milan and lives in Los Angeles, calls himself a “Visual (Effects) Storyteller”. According to imdb.com, he was responsible for the computer effects in the horribly underrated film Stitch, which starred Terminator 2 and American History X star Edward Furlong. But Schiassi’s current project is a video game remake. This is called Over Jump Rally and wants to beam the arcade and Sega Saturn classic Sega Rally Championship into the 2020s using Unreal Engine 5.

For the love of the (Sega) game

On the Fan remake Facebook page Schiassi raves about the original and explains his goals: He wants to create an almost photo-realistic image of the arcade classic, as a tribute to the golden Sega arcade era. And the first Sega Rally seems to him to be a good candidate because of the manageable scope (four tracks, three cars). He also hopes that Sega will play along – because they have had their valuable brands in Sonic Mania and Streets of Rage 4 made fit for modern times by external developer studios.

Schiassi wants to start with the desert track and a time trial mode, which he publishes for free. And then wait for Sega’s response. We’re excited to see how the project develops and we’ll stay tuned for you. And now have fun with the (worth seeing) video for Over Jump Rally.
