In preparation for the new generation of graphics cards, the first power supplies with 600 watt connectors are now available. These come from the Manufacturers Asus and Seasonic and have the necessary 12VHPWR connection.
That ROG Thor 1000W Platinum 2 uses one of these connectors, that Prime TX-1600 and the Prime PX-1600 even two each. The 12VHPWR connector is part of the new ATX 3.0 specificationwhich was introduced as a standard by Intel.
Asus and Seasonic install a breakout cable on two 8-pin connections in their power supplies, each of which has 300 watts. Together they achieve an output of 600 watts, which is not yet required for current graphics cards. The only graphics card with a 12VHPWR connector so far is the Geforce RTX 3090 Tiwhich “only” needs between 450 and 500 watts.
should in the future AMD’s RDNA3 and Nvidia’s Ada graphics cards use the 12VHPWR connector. These are not expected or at least presented for the first time until autumn 2022 at the earliest. First Estimates according to the first models will make full use of the 600 watts, other sources even report a requirement of up to 800 watts.
The special thing about the ATX 3.0 standard is that it allows extremely high peak loads. Up to 80 percent more should be possible for 1ms. That means the power supplies short-term, particularly high demands for performance can process better. This is particularly advantageous for demanding programs.
