Guild Wars 2 on Steam? That needs to change before the 2022 Steam release
2022 marks Guild Wars 2’s tenth anniversary, a significant milestone! Comparatively, Guild Wars 1 was just over seven years old when the sequel came out! In this respect, Part 2 shows staying power that many MMORPGs dream of. In keeping with the anniversary, the developers also want to reach a larger audience in 2022 by expanding to Steam. But reaching the massive community of Valve’s platform isn’t a simple push of a button. The developers themselves have emphasized: You only start once on Steam, so it should happen properly. If you mess up a launch like this, you will miss out on the boost you are actually aiming for due to poor user reviews and a lack of player numbers.
Someone wonders: Why is expanding to Steam so great anyway? Everyone can currently already Guild Wars 2 (buy now €49.95) play, it’s not like the MMO suddenly appears for a console. Especially since the sale of keys via Steam allows 30 percent of the money to go to Valve. Many publishers are willing to pay that, because Steam has a huge user base. Players who are only on Steam can enjoy advantages such as integrated chats, controller support, screenshot sharing and more. Since marketing and visibility has been a problem with Guild Wars 2 over the years (“Oh, the game still exists?”), this should be a big win. But what needs to change so that GW2 doesn’t fly on its virtual muzzle and Steam newcomers tear up the game?
Transparent costs: The problem of GW2
Of course, if you want to start in an MMORPG that has been running for a while, you just want to get all the previous content. While Guild Wars 2 is generally Free2Play, you have to pay for expansions and similar content. No problem really – you just get an all-round package! But there is no such thing. Because many beginners have a rude awakening when they get GW2 with all the expansions and then still have huge gaps in content. Because the living world (content updates with stories, areas and items) is free if you log in when the individual episodes are released. But if you haven’t played it yet, you have to buy everything afterwards. This currently costs around 50 euros, which is also the price of the previous extensions. Accordingly, newcomers should shell out 100 euros. Uff. Guild Wars 2 doesn’t have a monthly fee, but why should beginners still pay for the adventures that came out in 2014?
For the GW2 shop you need gems – these can be bought on Amazon.

With that in mind, it would be best for developers to make these episodes available for free, at least the oldest ones. The Arenanet people have taken an important step: The adventures of the first season of the Living World, which have not been available for nine years, are now reappearing in a polished version. And no one has to pay for these afterwards. Of course, we don’t have insight into how much the sale of old seasons brings in, but we know of enough people who ended up dropping Guild Wars 2 because they didn’t want to buy the old content. Even a purchasable release bundle that contains the entire Living World right away would provide clarity instead of shocking newcomers with surprising costs after playing the game. Page 2 continues with improvements that should make the Steam release smoother.
