According to insiders, Assassin’s Creed with a Japan setting is sure to come, the only question is how

Assassin's Creed China has already had fans visit Asia, but fans have been waiting for more adventures in the Far East ever since.

Assassin’s Creed fans have been waiting for a game set in feudal Japan for years. This was not only shown by our survey from 2020, but was also evident from the success of Ghost of Tsushima. And under certain circumstances it could really only take a few years, if the journalist Jeff Grubb is right.

Sexism issues at Ubisoft: The French developer and publisher has been accused of a toxic corporate culture since July 2020. Including far-reaching Sexism issues, misogyny and discrimination, which should be deeply rooted in the company. Consequences have already been drawn by Ubisoft, e.g. Replaced senior management staff and openly commented on the allegations, but internally, many employees feel that these measures are not sufficient.

Japan as part of Assassin’s Creed Infinity?

Jeff Grubb, well-connected games journalist at Giant Bomb, spoke on the new episode of Game Mess Decides Podcast about the rumored Assassin’s Creed Rift, in which Basim will play the main roles and Baghdad will serve as the setting.

The conversation then shifted to the future of the franchise. Grubb wouldn’t confirm for sure, but did mention that a reliable source told him about an upcoming Assassin’s Creed title set to be set in Japan.

However, it is unclear what exactly we can imagine with this game. On the one hand, it could be a standalone spin-off that comes after “all the other stuff,” by which he might mean Rift, Infinity, and the speculated VR game Nexus. On the other hand, it could only represent a part of the Assassin’s Creed Infinity just mentioned and confirmed, which wants to offer us several assassins and settings with its service concept.

Grubb doesn’t know in which direction it will ultimately go, “but it will be very similar to the RPGs and will play in Japan”, so it follows AC Valhalla and AC Odyssey orientate.

Japan as a setting is only a matter of time

Even though Grubb has proven several times that he has reliable sources to fall back on, rumors about the Japanese setting are nothing new, but have never been confirmed. A game in Japan would certainly fall back on a basis, since the Japanese brotherhood has already been picked up several times in the AC universe.

For example, the French novel “Assassin’s Creed: Fragments – La lame d’Aizu” (not available in German) is about a pair of siblings in Japan. And the Japanese assassins have also been mentioned in games. In AC Syndicate we find database entries and the opening of Assassin’s Creed 3 shows a tori sign that can be assigned to Japan. In the case of the latter, it was assumed that the successor to AC Odyssey would play in Japan, but this turned out to be wrong with the announcement and release of AC Valhalla. It could also still be an indication that feudal Japan will someday still await us as a setting in a game.

Until then, thanks to a really successful fan trailer, we can already imagine what Assassin’s Creed Japan could look like in Unreal Engine 5.

How do you think Japan fits in here? Do you want the setting more for Infinity or as a standalone game?
