Final Fantasy 16 doesn’t have an open world because then it would have taken 15 years to develop

Although Final Fantasy 16 does not have an open world, it should offer the pure Final Fantasy experience.

Anyone who wants an open world for Final Fantasy 16 should ask themselves whether they would be willing to wait much longer for the game in return. For about 15 years, all in all. At least that’s about the amount of time it would have taken to develop the game in this form, explains producer Naoki Yoshida. He also explains why this is so.

Final Fantasy 16 with Open World would have taken much longer

The “Final Fantasy Experience“is what the team behind Final Fantasy 16 wanted to achieve. Means: The game simply has to feel like a Final Fantasy and that includes things like production, dialogue, drama, sound or even Chocobos or Moogles. An open world doesn’t belong to.

These were the main goals: In the run-up to the development of Final Fantasy 16, the producer considered four things that the game must have in any case.

  • The story of a hero who saves the world – because this is Final Fantasy.
  • “A summon that goes haywire and destroys the map.”
  • A publication as soon as possible.
  • The game may not appear in several individual parts.

Not compatible with Open World: It is practically impossible to combine all this with a large open world, says the producer. It might have been possible if the development could take 15 years. Basically, Naoki Yoshida’s statements boil down to the fact that unfortunately we can’t have everything.

“All in all, creating a global story within an open world is almost impossible in terms of time and cost.

I think the team would be worried about that. Delivering what we see as the best story in an experience that brings games and movies together doesn’t need an open world.”
