God of War Ragnarök could be even fancier than expected

Not so grim, Ragnarök will impress graphically across the board.

There’s no question that God of War Ragnarök will offer some pretty nice visuals when it releases on November 9th. How smoothly we can experience this was not known until now. However, details on the quality and performance modes were given on English-language pre-order pages that went online a few hours ago.

Here you can pre-order God of War Ragnarök in Germany:

Few surprises

According to UK Mail Order Shop To it will be possible to choose between full 4K resolution at 30 fps and dynamic resolution at 60 fps on the PS5. Dynamically significant in the case that the resolution varies depending on the complexity of the scene being represented. The maximum of 2160p is rarely reached, Sony’s exclusive titles usually range from 1440p to 1800p – the image output is then a little softer.

The technology was also used by the direct predecessor, to which an interesting parallel can be drawn. This was playable on the PlayStation 5 thanks to an update in almost continuous 4K and 60 fps.

Uff, that looks good. Maybe too good for 4K and 60 fps at the same time.

What does that mean for the successor? The fact that we’re only getting the full 4K visuals of God of War Ragnarok at 30 fps might indicate that technology has made an unexpectedly big leap. Conversely, if the graphics quality increases, the refresh rate decreases.

Previous trailers and pictures rather suggested that the difference to Kratos’ northern debut will not be that big. However, it could become apparent that significantly more opulence and bombast can be expected.

Just as colleague Dennis would wish if he weren’t pondering Kratos’ death:

Kratos' death in God of War Ragnarök would be both a blessing and a curse

Kratos’ death in God of War Ragnarök would be both a blessing and a curse

Here’s what ray tracing is all about: On its pre-order page, the British mail order company lists numerous graphic developments compared to the first part. Chic reflections, better lighting and more precise shadows should be admired.

There is no mention of ray tracing, which is why we don’t think it will be in the game. The lack of an optional picture mode, which switches off the precise light beam calculation to enable a higher frame rate than 30 fps at ei 4K, would also speak in favor of this. Insomniac did this with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, for example.

No statements about the PS4

On the PS4 version pages missing information about the picture modes. As with the predecessor, however, a refresh rate of 30 fps can be assumed. While the base PS4 should fall back to 1080p, the PS4 Pro could go upscaled to 4K. There is no talk of a pure 1080p mode, this unlocked the frame rate in God of War on the PS4 Pro, but the gaming experience was very uneven.

Exclusive PS5 features complete the package

Unsurprisingly, Shop To also mentions additional features that are now part of the standard program of a PS5 exclusive. Below:

  • 3D audio
  • haptic feedback
  • Using the adaptive triggers
  • Fast loading times thanks to the NVMe SSD

Be careful with the information

Upon request, Sony was not able to confirm the details of the mail order company. However, they would match the descriptions of other providers. The same text can also be found on the website of the British shop GAME just like EBGameswhich is based in Australia.

We also re-watched the gameplay sequence in previous trailers and found a frame rate of 60 fps, and in some cases even 30 fps. So the information given doesn’t seem unrealistic to us, but we wouldn’t be surprised if God of War offered 60 fps by default.
