Yars: Recharged: Remake of the Atari 2600 classic announced

With Yars: Recharged, a remake of the Atari 2600 classic was announced for consoles and PC.

Atari announces the next game in the Atari Recharged series: Yars: Recharged. The game will be released later this year for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4|5, Nintendo Switch, Atari VCS, Stadia and for PC via Steam and Epic Game Store.

Yars: Recharged features indie-style gameplay with elements of classic arcade games and shoot ’em up, punctuated by moments of chaotic bullet hell.

In this remake of the cult classic, you take command of a Yar warrior and fight your way through countless enemy Qotiles to defeat them once and for all!

Yars: Recharged puts players at the center of a daring assault on the hostile homeworld, guarded by mechanical hives that pulse deadly cannons and eject whirling missiles.

Find safe spots in the hail of incoming fire, then charge forward in daring dashes to destroy enemy defenses. Gather enough energy by destroying enemy shields to activate the massively destructive Zorlon Cannon, which ejects searing blasts of cosmic energy and obliterates enemies.

Yars: Recharged requires players to pay close attention to visual and audible cues that indicate impending danger, and to master smooth flight controls as they navigate increasingly complex levels.

With the new game, Atari returns to the Yars universe, originally based on the cult classic Yars’ Revenge by Howard Scott Warshaw.

Yars’ Revenge was released in 1982 and made gaming history by becoming the best-selling original Atari title on the Atari 2600. Yars: Recharged carries on the legacy of this iconic franchise while giving fans the chance to experience an expanded, modern take on the concepts introduced in the original.

features

  • Boss Rush: Experience a seemingly endless barrage of enemies. Three hits and you’re dead, but don’t worry! The number of hits is reset when you go to the next round.
  • Mission Mayhem: Mission mode features 30 unique challenging bosses and only one life to defeat each one. Attack the bosses head-on with a barrage of bullets, or choose a different strategy and start with the smaller, more insignificant cores first.
  • Boosted Power-Ups: Smaller cores drop power-ups when destroyed. Shoot in all directions at once, use rapid fire, use explosive shots or fire a railgun – the type of power-up depends on the type of core that dropped it.
  • Co-op with a Co-Pilot: In both Arcade and Mission modes you can team up with a buddy and face off against hordes of enemy fighters.
