Will blockchain enter the block game? Developers about NFTs in Minecraft
have been for quite some time NFTs and blockchain technologies a controversial issue in the games industry: Some companies see them as big money, others take a clear stand against it and the “Play to Earn” idea, which turns video games into work, seems less tempting for most.
Most recently, the immensely successful mobile game Ni No Kuni: Crossworlds, with its use of cryptocurrencies noticed and today the Square Enix NFT shop was launched, where you get an exclusive NFT with the purchase of a Cloud action figure from Final Fantasy 7. Minecraft developer Mojang doesn’t want to hear anything about that, but spoke a clear word of power against NFTs.
Mojang speaks the word of power: Minecraft remains NFT-free
That statements of the developer appeared on the official site of the massively successful block game. The reason for the sudden statement was repeated requests from players, such as Minecraft (buy now €21.90) stand on NFTs and blockchain technologies and whether you want to incorporate them into the gaming phenomenon in the future:
“In order to ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, we do not embed blockchain technologies in our Minecraft client or server applications, nor use them to generate NFTs related to game content, including worlds, skins , personal items or other mods are allowed.”
“We will also be closely monitoring how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure the above principles are adhered to and determine if it provides a secure experience or finds other meaningful and inclusive applications in gaming. We currently have however, no intentions to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft.”
One of the reasons for this decision was, among other things, that the exclusivitywhich originates from NFTs, violates the principles of Minecraft: “We have these rules in place to ensure Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content. However, NFTs can create models of scarcity and exclusion that go against our policies and the spirit of Minecraft.”
Another reason for the rigorous decision speculation and the focus on monetization: “The speculative pricing and investment mentality surrounding NFTs shifts the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we believe is inconsistent with the long-term enjoyment and success of our players.”
