VRChat on Steam: Review Bombing for Anti-Cheat Announcement

from Rhonda Bachman
VR game VRChat is getting a lot of bad reviews on Steam right now. And that for a new feature that players in other titles are actually happy about. VRChat gets an anti-cheat, but with it it also bans the mods loved by the community.

The developers of VRChat are not going to have a good time looking at the recent reviews of the game on Steam. VRChat is a social platform that is currently still in Early Access. However, the game already has a sworn community that has long made improvements through mods themselves. However, the developers have now decided to implement Easy Anti-Cheat, which, conversely, also kills the mods.

Developers blame “malicious mods” for introducing anti-cheat

Although VRChat is still in the early stages of Early Access, it still regularly boasts around 30,000 daily players. However, the game still suffers from some issues like poor performance and lack of accessibility. Some of these issues have been solved by community mods. Modifications, while violating the game’s Terms of Service, have long been tolerated by the developers because they have helped the community and the title grow.

However, the developers at VRChat Inc. have now opted for an anti-cheat. The reason for this is “malicious mods” that are “responsible for a large number of problems for both our team and our users,” according to a blog post from the developers. The mods are a burden and the frustration of debugging mods is said to have “a chilling effect on VRChat creators”.

The announcement of the implementation caused an outcry in the community. Not only did players complain about the game on the Discord server, but they also melted the ratings on Steam. From the previous “mostly positive” VRChat has now slipped to “mostly negative”. Only 20 percent of the last reviews on Steam were positive (as of July 27, 2022, 12:15 p.m.). After player criticism, VRChat Inc. stated that it now wants to focus on developing the features and enhancements that players want and that will go away with the mod ban.
