Destiny 2: Developer radio silence after real threats against employees

After Bungie employees received real threats, the Destiny 2 developer has significantly reduced external communication.

The Destiny 2 community is in regular contact with Bungie developers on Reddit. The community manager dmg04, for example, answers many topics about the game.

But lately, Bungie seems to have shut down communications. But that’s not due to daylight saving time.

The user TheMediocreThor also noticed this in the DestinyTheGame subreddit, which is why he followed up with a post.

Community manager dmg04 reported in detail and stated that the previously mentioned harassment was not simply of a harmless nature, as can be read on Twitter or in other comments. He speaks of real threats against the employees and against the studio.

Bungie takes this very seriously and has therefore reduced external communication. Plan protective measures and strategies to avoid such kind of things.

There has been serious harassment against dmg04, and even against his family themselves, and he commends his employer for helping him deal with it. He himself has sometimes taken a break from his work.

Below is dmg04’s full response on Reddit.

“The thing is, the harassers we’ve spoken to aren’t just rude replies on Twitter or vague comments. There were real threats against our people and our studio. We take them seriously which leads to reduced communication as the team plans future safeguards/strategies to avoid these types of things.”

“I want to state very clearly that I appreciate the studio for how much they have helped me personally after some serious harassment against myself and my family. That’s partly why I take a break. Just because you can’t see it directly in a specific tweet or forum reply doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.”

“None of this is meant to be a punishment for the people who can provide clear and respectful feedback to our developers, mind you. There are no instances at Bungie where people are actively viewing a conversation and planning retaliation against our player base via hotfixes, updates, or communication strategies. Sometimes we just need to take some time to make things right. This can take weeks, but it can also take months – just like any other development pipeline because we want the best for our players AND our employees. That means we can’t just do business as usual until things are sorted out. It sucks but we want to make sure people are safe and taken care of.”

“I agree – it’s a shame we haven’t had as much interaction here lately. The team is planning ways to communicate with all of you – I look forward to some of those plans when I get back.

I can assure you that many in the team read the threads every day and share your feedback.”
