New World Exploits: Path of Exile boss would have put it back into beta
Chris Wilson, head of Grinding Gear Games, the studio behind Path of Exile, sat down virtually for a chat with Josh Strife Hayes. The Youtuber focuses on MMORPGs, around which the video series “The Worst MMO Ever?” rotates, in which he has already visited and assessed dozens of online worlds. He’s currently playing Path of Exile, which led to a 45-minute chat with Chris Wilson. It deals with the goals, strengths and weaknesses of the online action RPG. When it came to the topic of disastrous launches and player populations, it inevitably came to the topic of the exploit-plagued New World. And Chris Wilson made it clear: Grinding Gear Games would not have let the game continue like this.
New World: Chris Wilson has sympathy – but also criticism
The Amazon MMORPG got off to a remarkable start, with close to a million players. About 20,000 of these are now left. When asked how Chris Wilson would have handled the launch, there is a clear answer: “… I saw everything that went wrong and I understood it because I’ve had a lot of bad launches.” According to his own statements, he knows what it’s like when the server “burns”, you can’t do anything and you’re looking for a solution.
But one thing he thinks is real mortal sin. “There was one consistent theme across many issues that really annoyed me, and that was the fact that there were economic exploits that were difficult and slow to fix, rollbacks weren’t timed, and so on. It undermines the trust people have in a game because we play a game to get ahead, especially an online game.“
Chris Wilson: New World shouldn’t have gone on like this
In a game where progress and outperforming other heroes is the ultimate goal, it is a critical issue when players wake up in the morning, log in and suddenly see that everyone has billions of gold pieces. “The economy is untouchable,” insists Chris Wilson. “And if I were to launch a game and there would be so many problemsI would just put it back into beta and do whatever it takes, then do a big wipe and bring to market a stable game where player progress is actually reliable and properly tracked.”

We definitely recommend the video to anyone who wants a behind-the-scenes look at Path of Exile and game development in general. Also the many Worst MMO Ever? Videos by Josh Strife Hayes as well as lighting the Problems of New World and the reprehensible design of Diablo Immortal provide first-class insights.
Do you agree with PoE boss Chris Wilson? Had New World (buy now €39.99) after a certain number of exploits just needed a reboot and more time in the “oven”? Would that even have been the death knell for the Amazon MMORPG? Let us know in the comments which approach you think is better!
