PS5 update: new beta brings 1440p support and much more

from Norman Wittkopf
Sony has released a new PS5 system software beta that includes support for 1440p resolution, playlists and other feature updates.

After the usual resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels for gaming monitors was initially not an option for the Playstation 5, Sony has taken the feedback from the players to heart and is now providing support via HDMI via a beta update of the system software, provided that the Game supports this resolution, they say on the official Playstation blog. Meanwhile, games with a higher native resolution in UHD can benefit from improved anti-aliasing via supersampling to 1440p output.

As usual, beta access is limited to invited participants in selected countries, including Germany, but the finalized version of the update is expected to be available to everyone later this year. We reserve the right to deviate between the beta and the final version. Qualifying participants will receive an email invitation from Sony for beta access.

PS5 update: More new features

In addition, the beta update for the PS5 offers the creation of game lists in your own game library, which should simplify the organization of the games. This works through the “Your Collection” tab, where you can track up to 15 game lists and 100 games per list.

There is also a new option to listen and compare 3D and stereo audio on the same screen. There will also be easier access to ongoing activities: when a game is resumed, ongoing activities will be prominently displayed at the top of the game menu to make it easier to pick up where you last left off. Meanwhile, with the beta update, the voice chat map will now also allow party members to start a screen share to see their gameplay. However, when you join a party and a party member plays a game you can join, there is now a notification as well. Other social features include showing a new friend’s profile under “Requests Accepted” and sending stickers and voice messages to groups in the game base.
