Could the PS5 price go up? Sony doesn't give a concrete answer

We know from the past that the prices of electronics usually fall after a certain period of time.

At the moment, however, the situation is different. Shortages remain for semiconductors while the costs of materials, manufacturing and transportation are rising, as are energy prices. So are we possibly even facing a price increase for the PlayStation 5?

It wouldn’t be Sony’s first product

The fact is that Sony in Japan has already increased the prices of individual products, including cameras, Blu-ray players, home theater systems, headsets and speakers.

The question of a possible price increase for the PS5 was also put to the company during the announcement of the current business figures in a conference call.

Sony’s answer is not very specific, neither confirming nor denying a possible price increase: “As far as a possible price increase for the PS5 is concerned, I can’t tell you anything specific about the prices at this point in time,” replied Sony’s Hiroki Totoki, Executive Deputy President and Chief Financial Officer, in response to this question (via VGC).

In recent months, analysts have been predicting price increases for consumer electronics as chipmakers raise prices and buyers pass those costs on to customers.

In May, analyst Glenn O’Donnell confronted CNBC states that he expects price increases of ten to 15 percent.

“Chipmakers are facing their own mounting supply problems, exacerbated by the Ukraine war… and demand remains high while supply remains limited. Energy prices are also on the up, including electricity prices. Chip manufacturing requires an enormous amount of electrical energy.”

He expects price increases for PCs, cars, toys, consumer electronics, household appliances and other products.

As for the PS5, Sony has now sold 21.7 million copies of the console worldwide.
