WoW: Dragonflight brings us that Dracthyr Caller as a new class. It will be a while before we can play the Dracthyr people or the new class on the live servers. In addition to news about the new class, you can get in the mood for the Dracthyr with Dracthyr emojis!

Somehow when creating Caller of the Dracthyr, the Blizzard feature team came up with cute emojis. Feature teams are cross-functional teams made up of developers from diverse backgrounds, including producers, designers, artists, programmers, and QA testers, who work on a specific feature throughout its development. At some point in internal conversations, there was an extremely (un)fortunate event that resulted in Dracthyr emojis!
We owe the cute Dracthyr emojis to this incident
In the blog post on the Dracthyr emojis, the developers also explain exactly how this came about:
Thursday mornings are important for the feature team because we have our weekly feature meetings on those days. We meet as a group and share our updates on the development of the Dracthyr Caller. More than a year ago, on May 27th, 2021 to be precise, one of our character artists encountered technical problems and missed the meeting. But as the saying goes, there is always a silver lining, and this event served as inspiration for the creation of the sad comic Dracthyr you see in the image below.

The image was shared on our feature team’s Slack channel, which collects a lot of our discussions as many team members are working from home developing Dragonflight. Slack’s messaging system has a number of features like persistent chat rooms and, you guessed it, support for custom emojis. You can probably already guess where this is headed. We only needed one team member to say, “I need this kite as a reaction” to get our creativity going.
And that was the birth of our first emoji, aptly named “Saddragon,” as a reminder of our character artist’s desperation at technology. From then on, countless Dracthyr emojis were created by various team members. Whether born out of ideas, inspiration, artistic talent, or just born out of memes, almost every member of the feature team (and in some cases from other teams) has contributed to the many emojis we have today, and they continue to do so in Slack and used in our daily interactions. They weren’t originally intended for release, but we thought it would be fun to share them with the community and show the different art styles of the emojis – all of which reflect a subset of the artists.
