Currently there is speculation about the fact that Sony could raise the price of the Playstation 5. The reason for this is a presentation on the current business figures, which showed that PS5 games are selling worse and worse. Overall, 26 percent fewer titles were sold than in the previous year.
An investor then asked whether Sony plans to sell the console more expensive soon. But the CFO Hioki Totoki declined to answer. Of course, that raises a lot of concerns, especially since the company is still involved delivery problems has to fight.
They are currently falling deliveries of the Playstation 5 fell short of Sony’s expectations. Of course, the fewer consoles that are sold, the lower the demand for the associated games. The reasons for the delivery problems are still the difficult situation on the hardware market, disrupted supply chains, the consequences of the pandemic and the war in Europe.
The rising prices for chips and other hardware components and the rising raw material and energy prices do not go unnoticed by Sony. In April, the company already had prices for various cameras, speakers, soundbars, headsets and Blu-ray players raised in Japan.
To the current target for fiscal year 2022 in the form of 18 million PS5 consoles sold to achieve that, Sony would have to deliver another 5 million copies. The console is said to have sold 21.7 million units since its release.
Especially with video game consoles, the profit for the manufacturer is usually not particularly high. Devices are often even produced at a loss, since the main source of income usually lies in the associated software and the subscription fees. It is therefore questionable whether it would be worth raising the price of the console at all.
